The Next Renaissance

We are entering an era of abundance, powered by clean energy, synthetic biology, and AI, yet solving material scarcity faster than we are strengthening human connection. The next decade demands a new generation of Apollo Projects: bold, mission-driven efforts that compress decades of progress into years, creating regenerative systems where abundant energy, intelligent technology, and biology converge. But the true measure of this era won't be how intelligent our machines become, it will be whether we use them to explore what it means to be human: consciousness, intelligence, and our place in the universe.

The foundation of abundandance

We have entered an era of abundance, powered by exponential technologies, low-cost energy, synthetic biology, and AI with robotics.
 
Fueled by bold entrepreneurship and capitalism for good, these forces are steadily driving the costs of intelligence, computation, materials, and energy toward near-zero marginal cost, making goods and services increasingly affordable and accessible for all.
 
Scientific progress, accelerated by intelligent algorithms, is the true engine of prosperity for billions. It is enabling breakthrough materials, accelerating the discovery of life-saving medicines, and transforming the distribution of clean energy.
 
As energy, materials, and intelligence converge, they are becoming the foundational infrastructures of the twenty-first century, creating the conditions for a new era of human possibility, progress, and prosperity. Yet the challenge has shifted. It is no longer a question of whether we can invent the future, but if we can build it together.

But we forgot how to make Apollo projects real

Yet history shows that breakthroughs alone do not change civilizations. The Apollo Program, the semiconductor revolution, and the internet succeeded because societies organized around ambitious, long-term missions.  We've done this before: the first computer cracked the Enigma code, the Manhattan Project produced nuclear energy from theory in three years, and rockets broke the sound barrier within six.

Today, despite unprecedented computing power, scientific knowledge, talent, and capital, our ability to execute has slowed. Bureaucracy, fragmented incentives, lengthy procurement, and institutional risk aversion often delay technologies that could benefit society. 

History teaches us that mission-driven efforts can compress decades of progress into years. The coming decade demands a new generation of Apollo Projects: resilient energy systems, programmable biology, intelligent manufacturing, and AI that expand human capability rather than replacing it. 

This requires ambitious missions treated as a moral obligation to future generations, aligning governments, entrepreneurs, scientists, and investors around shared outcomes, built by patient capital, multidisciplinary teams, and institutions that think in decades, not quarters. 

Beyond consumption

The answer cannot simply be more consumption. Jevons' paradox reminds us that as technologies become cheaper and more efficient, we often consume more of them, not less.  Efficiency alone does not solve climate change or resource depletion; it can accelerate both. The goal is therefore not endless growth, nor economic degrowth, but a new model of prosperity: creating more value while using fewer resources in an antifragile system.
 
This means replacing scarcity-based systems with abundant, intelligent ones: biological materials replacing fossil inputs, clean energy distributed through intelligent grids, AI accelerating scientific discovery rather than attention capture, and products designed for durability rather than disposal.
 
The blueprint is emerging: expand energy generation through nuclear fission and, eventually, fusion; distribute energy like an internet of energy; manufacture materials through biology guided by intelligence, and build in existing factories; and treat intelligence itself as infrastructure, accessible to everyone rather than a scarce resource reserved for the few.
 
At the same time, globalization is evolving toward a more resilient model of regional production, shorter supply chains, and strategic self-reliance. The future will belong to societies that produce energy and manufacture locally while sharing knowledge globally through intelligent networks that allow ideas to flow freely.

Human connection

Yet abundance alone is not the same as progress. As our technologies become more powerful, loneliness, anxiety, and social fragmentation continue to rise. We are solving material scarcity faster than we are strengthening human connection.
 
The true measure of progress is not how intelligent our machines become, but how well they amplify what makes us uniquely human: curiosity, empathy, judgment, creativity, craftsmanship, beauty, and community. As intelligence becomes abundant, these qualities will become our greatest advantage.
 
The next century will not be defined by artificial intelligence alone, but by a deeper understanding of what it means to be human in an age of abundance. The next Renaissance will belong not only to engineers and algorithms, but to builders who unite science with humanity, infrastructure with purpose, and innovation with empathy.
 
By expanding our ability to understand the brain, harness abundant energy, and engineer the physical world, we may finally begin answering humanity’s deepest questions about consciousness, intelligence, and our place in the universe. The purpose of intelligence is not to replace the human experience, but to preserve, enrich, and amplify it. Exploration is the essence of the human spirit.

As intelligence becomes abundant, the world's most valuable work will become increasingly human. The next Renaissance will amplify human pursuits like craftsmanship, care, creativity, scientific discovery, and entrepreneurship, rather than be replaced by intelligent machines. Together, they will deepen our understanding of ourselves, preserve what makes us human, and expand the boundaries of what is possible.
